Following the first episode, “A Window into Tsuen Wan: Stephanie Teng Photo Exhibition”, this time we are going to present “A Window into Tsuen Wan: The Mills x Onion Peterman x Mou 1 Mou” Illustration Exhibition. Local illustrator Onion Peterman takes inspiration from the Hueng Che Street Market and Cooked Food Market for illustration. The paintings show the spatial layout of the market and different cultural landscapes. The exhibition, together with handmade books printed on silk screen, will be held at Mou 1 Mou Dessert in The Mills from 16th May to 16th July.

We encourage you all to explore your community from different perspectives and read into it and to appreciate all the wonderful sides that come along with it. In 2020, The Mills has chosen Tsuen Wan as our starting point and launched the “A Window into Tsuen Wan” community art collaboration project where artists and creators from different fields were invited to engage in art creation in Tsuen Wan community and collaborate with shops in The Mills for public exhibition in different forms.

Elements of the city like the corners, streets, buildings and people, are similar to one’s personality, such as how he dresses, speaks and acts. These small elements construct the visage of every community. Every community, like a person, has different aspects, characteristics and personalities. They have different interest, strengths and weaknesses. The community is where we work, live and inhabit. It is the origin of our lives with all of our joys and sorrows. When you looked into the place you live closely and attentively, you will discover more bits and pieces and beauty of the community.

The Mills is located in Tsuen Wan over half of a century and witnessed the changes of the community. As the first-generation satellite town in Hong Kong, Tsuen Wan was an industrial area in the 1950-60s. Along with industrial development and the socio-economic transformation and growth, roads, housing estates, libraries, town halls, stadiums and other different amenities started to emerge. These places play different roles in each era, and their functions also change over time.

Built to satisfy the daily needs of the surging population following the development of Tsuen Wan district, the Heung Che Street Market and Cooked Food Market are one of the earliest developed public infrastructures in the district. It is a three-story standalone building with a semi-open terrace. Most parts of the architectural structure and use of space were kept the same since its opening. It is one of the very few old public municipal markets that are still running.

With colourful art pieces, Onion Peterman depicts all kinds of daily intriguing encounters hiding in the market, giving you all a visual adventure in it. Apart from that, we have also invited Mou 1 Mou to pick a food ingredient from the Heung Che Street Market to create a brand new dessert which will only be available for a limited time, so people can really savour Tsuen Wan by experiencing a traditional taste.
