“…Best Grief is Tongueless—before He’ll tell—
Burn Him in the Public Square—
His Ashes—will
Possibly—if they refuse—How then know—
Since a Rack couldn’t coax a syllable—now.”

How can we testimony the ordeal of one’s state of mind? One way perhaps is for the bystander to empathise with their capacity to implore the presence of the amorphous subjects. The poem “Grief is a mouse” by American poet Emily Dickinson explored a range of metaphors to delineate a general impression of a certain sense of feeling, yet the rhetoric is valid only when the recipients share the same cognition of the implications.

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is presenting a series of programmes on the topic of “Civil Society, Arts and Mental Balance” in this September and October. To kick off the programme series, the exhibition “Tongueless” will open with an artist talk on September 3, 2020 (Thu) at 7:00pm at the Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio of the Institut.

The artworks by six Hong Kong artists take a multitude of forms, exude a kind of rawness and authenticity which heightened the individuality of each person’s journey. The exhibition serves to be the vehicle for self-expression that allows someone else a tiny glimpse into another world. The artworks demand engagement and draw attention to often otherwise silenced issues, experiences or perspectives. Through the exhibition, the audience is invited to experience elements of mental issues for themselves.
