Tea House Chamber Music Series: HK Phil: Musicial Postcards

Composers often found inspiration as they travelled around the world. Chinese American composer Ge Gen-Ru went to New York in his 30s and encountered Christianity, which greatly influenced him and resulted in the composition of his Angel Suite, a work expertly employs a wide range of styles to convey themes of spirituality through music.

French composer Maurice Ravel visited the Great Paris Exhibition in 1889 – an eye-opening event for this young man of 14 – at which he was first exposed to oriental musical styles. The unique sound of his String Quartet is a kaleidoscope of impressionist flair, neoclassicism, and his affection for Mozart. The Quartet also has unusual tonal effects, demonstrating his expanded musical vocabulary and hinting at his appreciation for Eastern music.
