“Echo Valley” Coco Ray Hui Man Solo Exhibition

Stand under the dazzling city lights, walk in the midst of the undulating hills, let out an agonised cry. Your howl is heard recursively, whistling through the ears, lingering in the mind, creating ripples in the heart, gradually fades into oblivion.

Artist Coco Ray Hui Man sees her paintings as a mournful cry amid turbulence, a soul-draining conversation with the heart, and a way to re-examine and prove her own self. In an urban landscape with unescapable walls and barricades, all mutter and whispers become the haunted echoes of dreams, from the feeling of helplessness in face of misfortune, to the cynical resistance to hectic days, to the voices of discontent with modern living.

Layers of echoes linger ceaselessly among the deep valleys. Are they an endless loop of self-awareness, restless self-questioning, or an imperturbable response from the other?

About the Artist

Born Hong Kong in 1996, Coco Ray Hui Man graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a BA degree in Art History and German in 2019. Ray later obtained her MA degree in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2021

Taking inspiration from fragmented urban experiences, Ray delves into the subtle emotions embedded in the city. Her work often recreates figurative scenes of people interacting with their surroundings, capturing the ambivalent situations in everyday life. Painting is her way of understanding the world, while she attempts to embrace the feelings of isolation and uncertainty.
